If you enjoyed Dead Space or are a fan of Survival Horror games, Dead Space 2 is an absolute must.
It has been said that “In space no one can hear you scream.” Well, in Dead Space, not only can they hear you scream, they can see as you bleed out from several orifices, many of which are not natural.
It has been 3 years since Isaac Clarke* fled the USG Ishimura with hell at his heels and it turns out that he did not escape entirely whole. The “Red Marker” changed him, infected his mind to a degree. Rest assured that DS2 is not a rehash of the first game. While you still play Isaac, there are several new items, weapons and creatures. Not only that, you are not in the Ishimura any longer. Now you fight the Necromorphs in a city called “Sprawl” on Titan, one of the moons of Saturn.
The basic atmosphere is the same, hauntingly tense where you will soon be on the edge of your seat waiting for the next encounter. You will face new, more frightening monsters. One of which is called the “stalker” described by executive producer Steve Papoutsis “as a velociraptor-like predator prone to hunting in small packs.” It will still be important to keep your weapons upgraded at all times so you can get the best use of them. You will have access to some new weapons as well. Such as the Javelin Gun which is quite effective once you upgrade it a bit.
Even more fun, the environment is destructible. Windows, tables, chairs, all can be used as weapons with your telekinesis. This can be a double-edged sword though since each item or light destroyed will change the way the rooms look cutting your light which makes it easier for the Necromorphs to sneak up on you. Or if you blow out the wrong window while too close you could be sucked out of the station into hard vacuum along with your pretty friends. Dead Space 2 is not a game to go blasting through at top speed. That technique will ensure failure and sudden death.
Dead Space 2 from Visceral Games drops January 25, 2011 and, from everything I’ve seen so far, it will be the most intense and frightening game yet. For a preview go to http://deadspace.ea.com/ watch the videos and download the demo. You will not regret it.
*FYI – Isaac Clarke’s name is a tribute to 2 of the best Science Fiction authors ever. Isaac Asimov and Arthur C Clarke.
